 Agenda:

March 21st - Introduction to interferometry (optional)

March 22nd, all day - Hands-on Data Reduction

We will follow a script/web page preforming all the standard ALMA 12-m array data reduction, including normally automated steps in order to understand what is going on and spot any problems, but with an emphasis on imaging and intial image analysis.

The AS2UDS data set contains two Science Goals (SGs), each comprising 15 targets. We will follow a script to reduce the first SG, and then use a script with missing inputs to practice on the second data set.

Worksheets for basic continuum data reduction and data reduction problem solving.

  • 09:00 - Overview of AS2UDS data for reduction
  • 09:30 - Hands-on: calibration following script
  • 10:30 - Coffee
  • 11:00 - Hands-on: imaging following script
  • 12:30 - Lunch
  • 13:30 - Hands-on: calibration and imaging using your inputs
  • 15:45 - Tea
  • 16:15 - Hands-on continued

March 23rd, all day - Hands-on Data Reduction

This day we will use the ALMA Science Verification observations of SDP.81 (see the ALMA Science Data Verification webpage, the webpage listing the CASA guides for the 2014 Long Baseline Campaign, and published papers).

Starting with the calibrated Band 6 data we can inspect the visibility data to identify the line channels, subtract the continuum and image the continuum and spectral line emission.

Worksheet for spectral line data reduction.

  • 09:00 - Hands-on: inspection and imaging of SDP.81
  • 10:30 - Coffee
  • 11:00 - Hands-on: continued, image analysis (your ideas!)
  • 12:30 - Lunch
  • 13:30 - ALMA update, Cycle 4 capabilities and on-line info
  • 14:15 - Demo and hands-on of Cycle 4 OT (if available!)
  • 16:15 - Finish

Additional information:

Location: The workshop will take place in the UK ALMA/e-MERLIN room, 3.136 (3rd floor) in the Alan Turing Building. Directions to the Alan Turing Building can be found here.

Preparation: It would be useful to register with the ALMA Science Portal, if you haven't already, to make sure that you can access all documentation (and, in future, tools). The basic packages you need for this Workshop will be available on our workstations, but you will probably want to install CASA and the Observing Tool (OT) on your laptop in future, if you think you might need help please bring your laptop.
