Face to face support

Face to face support

The UK ARC welcomes ALMA users. In the early stages of operation we will provide face to face support for astronomers planning, scheduling or reducing ALMA observations. We can accomodate up to about 8 visitors at any one time and if necessary we will prioritise people processing ALMA data or undertaking major projects which are difficult to plan using the standard tools available at the time. See About UK ARC for details of specialist support available and practical local information.

Prospective ALMA users can use their own laptops for proposal preparation and some data reduction as long as these meet the minimum requirements for using CASA

and other software; we provide some external screens/kepboards. However, ALMA data volumes will be very large and require powerful processors. For Cycle 0 we are providing a powerful computing cluster which can support at least four teams reducing ALMA data at any one time, as well as high-speed data links.  These capabilities will be expanded for future cycles.  Users should consult us in advance if they want their data downloaded from the ALMA Archive in preparation for their visit, and to estimate the capacity of the storage media which they should bring to take the data products away afterwards.

If you would like to plan a visit please contact  alma@jb.man.ac.uk
