Expertise
All support staff can give assistance with any aspect of ALMA proposal preparation and data reduction, such as
- Use of ALMA software and tools
- Estimating brightness temperatures on ALMA scales
- Chosing the best available spatial resolution for your goals and estimating whether single dish data are required (when implemented)
- Simulations and interferometry imaging fidelity
- Self-calibration and high dynamic range imaging
- Devising a mosaicing strategy
- Devising spectral configurations to include the required lines at suitable resolutions, making best use of the available sub-bands
- Advising on the array sensitivity at different wavelengths and atmospheric conditions
- Observing time-variable sources or multi-frequency observing (not fully available in the first year or so)
- Polarisation observations (not fully available in the first year or so)
- Data reduction
- ALMA calibration and basic imaging will eventually be pipelined; initially staff will reduce the data to a similar stage.
- ARC staff will support users who require partial or full re-reduction of the data, e.g. making cubes at a different spectral or spatial resolution or adjusted to the velocity of a different line.
- Requests for help are coordinated through the EU ARC Helpdesk and if you have a particularly specialised query then the node with the most expertise can be consulted, e.g. the Czech node for Solar observing.
If your project has particularly complex aspects, a member of staff with the most relevant experience will be assigned to help you.
