Ten Steps to using ALMA

Proposal 'emergencies'

Normal queries can be made using a helpdesk ticket via the Knowledgebase (see point 7) or by contacting the UK ARC. If you encounter technical difficulties submitting a proposal, make sure that you have registered (point 1) and then go to the Knowledge base, then to Submit a Ticket and select Proposal Submission Emergency - urgent connectivity issues.

Checklist of steps and links for planning  ALMA observations.

  1. Register with the ALMA portal (and make sure your prospective co-investigators do too). This will give you access to all the software and technical information you need. Seek help here in the unlikely event that  you have problems registering or using the Helpdesk.
  2. Browse the documentation available from the portal (you do not have to be registered to access this but you must register before submitting a proposal). Some of the most useful links are below:
  3. Download the Observing Tool for planning observations and submitting a proposal, and see the Quick Start guide.
  4. The online Sensitivity Calculator (also included in the OT) and documentation.
  5. The OT contains links to line lists or you can consult the Splatalogue.
  6. If you need to make simulations you can use the Observing Support Tool or simdata inside CASA.
  7. The Knowledgebase accumulates answers to user questions but if you have a new question, use your portal login details to submit a ticket to the Helpdesk (you must be registered with the Portal to query the Helpdesk).
  8. Write your science case, fill in the observing requirements in the OT and submit Cycle 0 proposals by 2011 June 30th 1500 UT!
  9. When you get awarded time and your observations have been made, in full operations a pipelined, calibrated image cube will be delivered.  However this is not available in Early Science, so book time with your ARC node if you want help with data reduction.
  10. All ALMA data are archived and will become public one year after observations are completed.
